Welcome to Reading for Wellbeing.
We are dedicated to improving the wellbeing of people affected by cancer and have a particular interest in the effect of “cancer fog”
(cancer-related cognitive impairment) on reading and daily life.
Leveraging existing studies of the positive effects of reading on wellbeing, and searching for a way to reinstate those therapeutic benefits to people affected by cancer, including those impacted by cancer fog, this new model of bibliotherapy was developed and trialled with much success. We now run workshops to train hospital volunteers to deliver this program. We also run workshops for people affected by cancer fog and their families, to help shine a light on this seldom-mentioned problem and its impacts.
This program is so simple – it’s about the power of stories and connection to bring some relief from stress, anxiety,
depression, pain and nausea.
“Instead of focusing on pain, I was focusing on the story, and what you were sharing with me, so it became a lovely, pointed distraction, to take me away from pain” (study participant)
Our dream is to see this program in cancer centres, hospices, as part of community palliative care programs,
in community centres and in families.
NOTE: Throughout the website, you will notice the repeated reference to people affected by cancer, however these practical ideas and tips are suitable for anyone with chronic illness or mild cognitive impairment.
